Painting a school playground with colorful markings looks inviting to children. And if those playground markings also inspire kids fitness, it’s even better.
Can asphalt be painted?
Yes! This colorful fitness trail was painted directly on the blacktop of an elementary school playground.
These days kids love their devices and often sit for long periods of times playing video games.
Schools need colorful playground art that entices kids to engage in action oriented play with each other.
This video shows a painted fitness trail on a school playground.
I enjoyed painting this school playground. Now the schoolyard is interactive and colorful, too.
How did a muralist end up painting on a playground?
When this elementary school PTA voted to fund a fitness trail for students, their School Principal contacted me. She remembered how easy I was to work with on other school painting projects and thought I could come up with something fun for their playground.
Before painting the playground I asked to speak with the Physical Education Teachers at the school. I wanted to make sure I incorporated the best activities for kids, into their fitness trail.
I wanted to ensure the painted exercises and instructions were age-appropriate, as well as useful. Also, Classroom teachers and Fitness Coaches would use the playground during the day, and Coaches would be using it for after school programs.
After meeting with the school’s most important decision makers, I got started painting.
Here is a closer look at the fitness activities I hand-painted onto asphalt.
And some more of the colorful playground markings to inspire kids fitness.
These are the exercise stations. Doesn’t the painted circle add a nice touch?
In another area I painted a fitness ladder which could be used in many ways by after school Coaches and Phys Ed Teachers. You can see it in the video at top of this page.
A activity trail should have a variety of different exercises that kids know how to do. The school and I, certainly accomplished that.
I painted this fitness trail last year during spring break. Weather was rain-free, and the temperature was just warm enough for the paint to adhere well to the asphalt, and cure.
If your school could use some murals or creative painting over spring break, give me a call.

The best time of year to paint a playground is when students are off from school.
Right now Los Angeles County schools are closing for Spring Break. Although it’s a little wet to paint outside, it may actually be a good time to do some interior school painting.
And new murals at school would give kids something exciting to talk about once school is back in session. Especially since some kids may be worried about going back to school after the corona virus scare.
